The direction of “better”

Sometimes, we notice improvement. There are many parts that go into computers that are much better now than they were even a few years ago. Memory cards have a larger capacity and are less expensive. CPUs work faster. Computer displays now offer outstanding image resolution.

Other times, we notice the lack of improvement. Excel is a powerful program, and it is possible to create spreadsheets that contain vast amounts of data. Frequently, however, the spreadsheets can only be comfortably read or interpreted by the person who created them. If computers made it easier for people to create self-explanatory spreadsheets, documents that made it easy for new recipients to explore data and relationships, that would be a noticeable improvement.

If we were to ask, “why might people want to use a computer?” the answer would probably not be “to confuse each other” or “to generate more work.” There are several possible answers, though. One answer might be, “to help people think,” and another might be, “to help people communicate.” I would like to notice improvements in these areas.
