Mis-wasting time

When people hear things they think are simple, they rarely make a point of thinking about them. On the other hand, when people hear things that are seemingly complex or confusing at first, they may make a point of thinking about them.

Maybe we are genetically predisposed to do this. After all, our minds have been tuned by evolution into pattern recognizing systems: once we determine what “box” an idea or event fits into, we can go on to attend to the threats, challenges, and opportunities that are unique.

But things that appear to be complex and confusing are frequently just ordinary things presented awkwardly, and things that appear to be simple are sometimes deeply nuanced or profound. By not “wasting time” thinking about them, we may miss nearly everything.
